A Hidden Gem in the Engadin

Everyone knows St. Moritz.

But after this trip, I found myself wondering why more people aren’t talking about Pontresina.

Located just 6 kilometres from its famous neighbour, this charming village has all the beauty of the Engadin (alpine valley in the eastern Swiss Alps) but feels much quieter and more relaxed.

This August, my mum and I packed our bags and escaped there for a few days of mountain air, long breakfasts, beautiful views, and a little bit of grand hotel magic…

A Grand Dame of the Alps

The building dates back to 1848 and is considered one of the most important examples of Belle Époque architecture in the Swiss Alps. The iconic green dome, elegant façade, and historic interiors make it feel like stepping into another era.

One evening, we had dinner in the hotel’s historic Grand Restaurant.

High ceilings. Crystal chandeliers. Elegant tables.

A setting that feels wonderfully old-world.

You almost expect someone in a ball gown to walk through the room.

The kind of place where generations have celebrated holidays, anniversaries, and special moments for more than 175 years.

And now my mum and I were about to create our own memories here…

Our Junior Suite Grand Classic

The moment we opened the door to our suite, I knew I was going to love it.

We stayed in a south-facing Junior Suite Grand Classic overlooking the Engadin mountains and the Roseg Glacier.

The suite was redesigned by renowned French interior designer Pierre-Yves Rochon, whose portfolio includes some of the world’s most iconic luxury hotels.

One thing I absolutely loved: As much as I adore historic hotels, I secretly love it when the rooms feel fresh, bright and contemporary. Give me a 19th-century facade and a beautifully renovated suite, and I’m happy!

What I loved most was the balance.

The suite felt elegant without being overly formal.

Contemporary while still respecting the hotel’s historic character.

Soft green tones (they have different room categories with varying colour schemes), beautiful fabrics, plenty of natural light, and those incredible mountain views from the balcony made it feel calm, bright, and welcoming.

And yes, more than once, I was tempted to cancel our plans, order room service, and simply enjoy the room and view a little longer.

Every morning started the same way.

Opening the curtains.

Looking outside.

And saying some variation of:

“Wow.”

Again.

The Engadin really knows how to show off.

The Spa With One of the Best Views in Switzerland

Of course, we also spent time in the spa.

The panoramic indoor pool is one of the hotel’s most famous features.

Swimming while looking out towards the mountains feels almost surreal.

The spa covers more than 2,000 square metres and offers everything you need for a proper switch-off moment.

An Aperitif at Kronenhof Bar

Before dinner, we stopped at the Kronenhof Bar.

We settled into comfortable chairs, ordered drinks, and watched the evening unfold around us.

A Special Evening at Kronenstübli

For our second dinner, we visited Kronenstübli.

The hotel’s gourmet restaurant is listed in the Michelin Guide and has long been one of the culinary highlights of the region.

The atmosphere is intimate and refined, yet never intimidating.

Just beautifully prepared food, attentive service, and a setting that encourages you to slow down and enjoy the evening.

Exactly how fine dining should feel.

Why I Loved This Stay

I’ve stayed in many beautiful hotels over the years.

But Grand Hotel Kronenhof has something special.

Maybe it’s the history.

Maybe it’s the setting.

Maybe it’s because I experienced it together with my mum.

Probably all three.

It’s elegant without feeling stiff.

Luxurious without being flashy.

Historic without feeling stuck in the past.

And surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery Switzerland has to offer.

And even after several days, I never stopped taking photos.

My camera roll can confirm that. 😄

As we packed our bags and looked through my camera roll, I already knew…

I’d be back.

Until next time, Kronenhof.
